Playing in some reflecting waves, photo by Nancy Uschold

A third generation Irish American and 100% Irish, I was born and raised in the Chicago area. Out of college, my engineering degree enabled me to work in the computer field but now jointly own a sea kayak instruction business, www.SeaKayakSpecialists.com, and have a sports massage practice (www.SamCrowley.biz) in Marquette, MI. I am an Advanced Open Water Instructor Trainer Educator with the American Canoe Association. In 2006, instruction kept me busy from april through october.

Sea kayaking for me started in 1991 in the seductive Apostle Islands off of Bayfield, WI. Life hasn’t been the same since especially after moving to Marquette, MI in the summer of ‘97. Living in Marquette with my lifestyle has given me the opportunity to pursue sea kayaking with more vigor. Being able to drop everything and run out to play when waves appear is one fringe benefit, having more freedom to schedule personal paddling is another.

Since 1999, I have on average done 5-6 weeks of personal camping trips with typically one trip around 2-3 weeks long. This has allowed to me to gain experience and build on my 34+ days of instruction (outside of symposiums). My first 21 day trip was intoxicating and more long trips were soon planned.

Seeing slide shows about Skellig Michael and meeting Chris Duff after seeing slide shows on his Ireland and New Zealand trips, has enticed me to do this trip. It was also a realization that my lifestyle allowed me to do just about any trip.
